Helensburgh Foodbank

Helensburgh Foodbank

The Helensburgh and Lomond Foodbank currently provides emergency food to families and individuals in crisis. The number asking for food that they do not have to cook as they have no power has increased over the last 4 years the Foodbank has been delivering services. The Foodbank propose to follow the same model already piloted by the Trussell Trust to provide emergency power to families and individuals in fuel poverty. Fuel poverty is having a significant impact on people's health and wellbeing

Points

In the past year, our 4th year of operation, we have seen a 7% increase in the numbers needing our assistance, this equates to over 120 bags of food dispenses per month. The numbers asking for food that they do not have to cook as they have no power has also increased. The Foodbank will follow the Trussell Trust model of offering emergency power to families in fuel poverty. The reasons given for accessing the Foodbank are delays or changes to benefits, DWP sanctions, low pay and the rising costs

In these days of food and fuel poverty it is imperative we support the most vulnerable in our community. Very worthwhile cause.

Dear Ian Thank you so much for your comments. it is heart-breaking sometimes to think that there are families in our area that cannot turn on a kettle or a microwave to heat up a meal

At a time when money is getting very tight for many people this service is greatly needed in the area. It is hard to imagine what it is like not to be able to afford food to keep you going. It could come to us all at some time through no fault of our own. Many people do not seem to think that in Helensburgh there is a need for this service but statistics of use prove this is a much needed service. The project is run by volunteers - well done to them all. Keep up the good work.

It is an awful indictment of our rulers that people have need of a food bank in this day and age. We must support those who are in need and also those who run this vital service. Thank you.
