Bins on Seaford seafront are too small and on a sunny weekend are left overflowing with rubbish, which is then often spread about by seagulls and foxes. Much of the 'rubbish' is recyclable, consisting of plastic drink bottles, aluminium cans and cardboard wrappers. But all of these valuable materials currently go to the Newhaven incinerator. We need recycling facilities at close intervals along the seafront.
Recycling points along the seafront (and in the town) at regular intervals would benefit everyone who lives, works and visits Seaford as it would make for cleaner town and contribute to a sustainable environment.
The Smarter Seaford Group asked STC for recycling bins on the seafront 3 years ago. We were told they would be too expensive to install and maintain. We were eventually given the current bins which do not allow for any recycling and are still attacked by gulls. Recycling would hopefully reduce the amount of rubbish put in these bins.
The lack of seafront recycling is wasteful, causes overflowing bins and scattering of rubbish by gulls and foxes. It sends a bad message to visitors about Seaford's environmental attitude and makes the town look rather backward. Visitors would clearly like recycling - they often segregate their rubbish and leave the recycling separately to one side. They are wasting their time though as Seaford Town Council just combines it all again and sends it to the incinerator.
Many people already recycle their household rubbish, the addition on these bins on the seafront will reinforce the ethos to visitors and people who have not yet thought about recycling
